TOPIC: THE NEW MASTER IS REVEALED
TEXT: JOHN 3:22-36
This passage points to Jesus as the new Master from the argument that developed between John's disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of who really purifies man's heart, John or Jesus? They noticed that more people were going to Jesus to be baptised while few were coming to John even when it was John that introduced Jesus to the public. Then how come Jesus was getting more patronage than John? John harboured no envy as the forerunner to Jesus, he was not struggling to maintain his lead position as a once-respected prophet and baptizer. Rather, he made profound statements in (vs. 26-29). First, he said, “A man can receive only what is given him from heaven.” This means that he can only operate within God's mandate and commission on him. He is therefore happy fulfilling just that. The second statement, “I am not the Christ but am sent ahead of him. The bride belongs to the bridegroom.” By these statements, John affirmed that Jesus alone was God's appointed Messiah: the Bridegroom who was from above and was God's spokesman. He alone has the Spirit without limit and determines man's destiny.
Will you take John the Baptist (who was introduced by Jesus as 'greater among those born of women' Matt.11:11) seriously, and receive Jesus as Master over your life?
I receive You as the New Master over my life's destiny. Keep me faithful to You, dear Lord, Amen.
