TOPIC: FOR HOW LONG WILL YOU LINGER?
TEXT: 1 KINGS 18:17-29
It is often said that you cannot eat your cake and have it. The people of Israel lingered between two opinions for long unwilling to choose one path. They thought they could enjoy the so-called benefits of worshipping Baal and at the same time remain loyal to Yahweh. Elijah charged them to choose one. The good news for them came in the contest between the God of Elijah and Baal on Mount Carmel. 850 prophets of Baal and Asherah assembled to demonstrate that their idol was the preferred one to be worshipped. For about nine hours, they cried, rolled on the ground and even cut themselves with knives as an act of devotion meant to rouse their god to action but to no avail. There was no response, no answer and nobody responded. Elijah's challenge was a seemingly difficult and impossible task for Baal. Today, many of us have chosen to follow gods of wealth, power, fame, status, etc. Unfortunately, these cannot solve the greatest need of humanity: forgiveness or sin and salvation. These cannot lead, guide or instruct us in righteousness.
Are you still lingering there, not knowing whether to turn to God or those idols?
I pray that You open the eyes of my brothers and sisters who are still under the yoke of idolatry so that they will turn to You in faith, in Jesus name, Amen.
