TOPIC: EMPTY RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES OF JUDAH AND JERUSALEM
TEXT: ISAIAH 1 : 10 - 20
It may be difficult to understand the opening verse of today's text without going back to read vs 1-9. There, the rulers of the nation, who are being addressed as Sodom and Gomorrah in vs. 10, are enjoined to be like Judah and Jerusalem.
As Christians, whenever the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah are mentioned, what readily comes to minds is the evil committed by the people of the land under their rulers and the grave consequences they suffered.
Judah and Jerusalem, just like Nigeria our country, have been found to be in a similar situation, having the same empty religious activities and thinking that they are serving God.
No wonder, the Lord called heaven and earth (vs 2ff) as witnesses to the atrocities of the people, yet they came before God with all forms of religious rituals.
In view of the dire consequences that befell the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, God in His lobe showed the ruler what to do to avoid the same judgement, vs 16-18.
God required wholesome repentance from all forms of sin and unrighteous arcs termed worship, then they could come unto the Lord for forgiveness and enjoy the good of the land.
Why has our nation descended to the level of Sodom and Gomorrah?
Oh Lord, we pray for the spirit of genuine repentance for both the rulers and the people of our land, that we may not face the same consequences as Sodom and Gomorrah, in Jesus name, Amen.
Happy New Month!
