TOPIC: ISRAEL DIVIDED
An African proverb says: "What an old man can see sitting down, a young man will not be able to see even if he climbs to the top of a tree." This means that we should never take the counsel of the elderly for granted. Rehoboam, King Solomon's son and successor to the throne, made the mistake of ignoring the counsel of the elderly and accepted that of the younger generation. He paid for it very dearly. Unfortunately, Rehoboam's costly mistake did not affect only him negatively but the entire Israel as the nation was divided in two. This was a direct consequence of King Solomon's idolatry and Rehoboam's arrogance and disregard for matured counsel. Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old" (Proverbs 23:22).
