TOPIC: LISTENING TO HEAR TEXT: 1 THESSALONIANS 4:16-18 Three things are connected to hearing in 1 Thessalonians 4:16. These are the Lord's loud commands, the voice of the archangel and the trumpet call of God. These three sounds provide a premise for the rest of the events that occur in vs.17-18. The Lord's loud command announces the event and introduces Christ. This voice of command connotes the authority of Christ. Believers who hear this command understand it. Then comes the voice of the archangel. The archangel Michael, who is one of the two mentioned by name in the Bible (the other being Gabriel), leads the heavenly hosts in war. The coming of Christ implies victory over sin and the adversary. Then the third sound to be heard is the trumpet call of God. This is like a roll call of all believers to meet their Lord. The challenge that comes with these three significant sounds is whether believers are able to hear them or not. In many ways, believers today are deafened by the "sounds" of this world and those of their worries and concerns that they are not listening to hear the Lord anymore.
Little wonder, not many are living with eternity in view. In other words, many are not listening and watching keenly for the Lord's return. They complain about the world not being comfortable and conducive but do not seem to be longing for a better place. Materialism and the attractions of the world still preoccupy them. Ask God this Wednesday to help you listen attentively to His voice and to prepare for His coming.
QUESTION Are your ears well-tuned to hear God in these last days? Will you hear those last three sounds when they are made? PRAYER If I have wax in my ears, Lord, please remove it. I want to hear those last three sounds when they are made. Help me to be ready, Amen.
