When Revival comes – Religion would be overthrown! Part B - Rev. Stephen Baba Panya

When revival comes, the first thing to give way is religion!

Most of what goes on in many churches including the Sunday worships, the Prayer meetings, the massive giving of tithes and offerings etc; is mostly mere religion! When revival comes, mere religion would be overthrown and replaced by the real thing – Christ Jesus!

The time of Amos is a classical case. There was so much religion going on with so many sacrifices of animals and so much music as worship at the temple altar, but not in Spirit and in truth. The people were giving so much tithes and offerings that they were actually bragging about it! (Amos 4:4-5). But it was all mere religion because, in spite of these many religious activities going on, the people were living steeped in sin; the sin of corruption, bribe-taking, oppression of the righteous, injustice to the poor (Amos 4:11-13) and much more. There was so much sexual immorality that as relatively decent as the society was generally then, father and son were sleeping with the same girl! (Amos 2:7). Consequently, God told the Israelites, "I hate, I despise your religious feasts; I cannot stand your assemblies. Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them. Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps.” (Amos 5:21-23).

God so much detested the religion going on in the temple that, he allowed the temple to be destroyed in order to put a stop to the religious activities going on there presumably in the name of the Lord, when in fact the Lord was not present there and certainly not pleased with what was taking place! After the temple was destroyed and the sinful religious activities brought to a stop, God then sent into the hearts of the people a hunger for the real thing, a famine for hearing the true words of the Lord (Amos 8:11). Most of what is going on in many churches today is mere religious activities, while we continue living in sin, and this is detestable to God. Our so-called worship, especially praise worship in many churches today, has become an irritating noise to God l
